So you can hack around this in inbuilt camera apps by drawing a blur on the background or having an algorithm use two snaps at different focuses to infer which parts of the photo generally are the background, etc. So you get something where the background is blurred but also one or two of your fingers and not the background shown through the hole between your arm and body.
That's what that blur is same as lindsay ellis used on photos of her own home, it's not mysterious or subtle it's a very standard editing feature for camera phones now shut the fuck up please
